Oral Participation Rubric

Oral Participation
As we embark on our literary journey, there will be many opportunities to contribute to class discussion. I intend to recognize thoughtful responses, and hold you responsible for following the class' conversation. Your oral participation will be scored on a 3 point scale.

3 points - A three point response not only answers the question, but provides examples that support the point you are making. Additionally, a three point answer looks at more than one side of the issue.

Ex: What were the effects of Columbus' discovery of America?

Columbus' discovery of America was a triumphant achievement in bravery and human ingenuity. Columbus was a skillful navigator, who did the best he could do with what little he was given. Sailing three ships across the ocean was no small feat. However, it can be argued that his discovery, while profitable and exciting for Europe, was disastrous for local native populations. Upon his arrival in the West Indies, Columbus bribed and cajoled natives, often killing those who did not comply with his wishes.

2 points – While a two point response answers the question and looks at more than one side of the issue, it does not provide sufficient support.

Ex: What were the effects of Columbus' discovery of America?

Columbus' discovery of America was a triumphant achievement in bravery and human ingenuity, and we still talk about it today. However, it can be argued that his discovery, while profitable and exciting for Europe, was disastrous for local native populations.

1 point – A one point response answers the question, but does not provide examples, and only looks at one side of the issue.

Ex: What were the effects of Columbus' discovery of America?

Columbus' discovery of America was a great achievement in history. We wouldn't be here without Columbus.

0 points – You will get no points if you are unable to provide a reasoned response for the question, or if your response is off-topic. You will also receive no points if you are called on and are not paying attention.

Ex: What were the effects of Columbus' discovery of America?

What are we talking about? Is this a weekday?
